Abstract
This chapter concentrates on the functional biology of protozoa, that is, the study of physiological and structural properties from the viewpoint of their adaptive significance. In protozoology the subject is intimately related to cell biology in general, as regards structure, function and biochemistry. I have tried to limit the subject to its ecological and adaptive aspects: motility, for example, will be treated with emphasis on hydrodynamics and its adaptive significance, with only passing reference to the molecular basis.
