Abstract

Flagella, and especially bacterial flagella, have been thoroughly investigated during the past decade. Before that they were rather taken for granted. This awakening of interest was largely due to the electron microscope referred to as the EM) which made them more real, and revealed new features, without solving their mysteries. Perhaps also, as Knaysi (145a) said, the doubts expressed by Pijper (233-251b) as to the function and nature of bacterial flagella stimulated a good deal of much needed research. The entry of physicists like Astbury into this biological field radically affected the position and recalled D’Arcy Thompson’s dictum (302) that the physicist will one day explain the properties of the flagellum.

“There was, and still is, a tendency for morphologists to ascribe to organs and structures functional significance for which there was, or is, little observational evidence.” Gray, J.: Nature 173, 227 (1954).
