Zusammenfassung
Die viele extreme Biotope besiedelnde Familie der Ephydridae entsendet auch einen Vertreter in den Großen Salzsee in Utah, wo Ephydra cinerea und Artemia salina die einzigen Metazoen sind, die diesen See bewohnen. Der Salzgehalt von über 27 % stellt an die Ionen- und Osmoregulationsfähigkeit der Bewohner hohe Ansprüche, doch sind diese nur für Artemia salina näher bekannt (Croghan 1958a—e). Von Ephydren weiß man einiges über Bewohner wenig extremer Gewässer (Beyer 1939, Ping 1921, Zangheri 1957 und Zavattari 1921), wobei zwar von den Autoren auf die Osmoregulation, aber nicht auf den Ionenhaushalt eingegangen wird. Über die Biologie von Ephydra cinerea und deren osmotischer Regulation wurde an anderer Stelle berichtet (Nemenz 1960 a, 1960 b).
