Die Zahl der Blutkörperchen ist im physiologischen Zustand ungefähr bestimmt, nimmt aber im pathologischen bald zu, bald ab. Das ist zwar von früher her bekannt, aber wie solche Regulation geschieht, ist lange Zeit eine ungelöste Frage gewesen.
