Zusammenfassung
Kein Geringerer als Hans Horst Meyer hat bekanntlich die Reihe der „Ergänzungsbände“ (I, 1–10) des „Handbuches der experimentellen Pharmakologie“ durch seinen programmatischen Aufsatz über „Wesen und Sinn der experimentellen Pharmakologie“ eröffnet. In diesem, bereits im Jahre 1934 abgeschlossenen Aufsatz betont der genannte Altmeister der Pharmakologie, daß hierhin schließlich auch im Grunde alle pharmakologischen Versuche über ätiotrope Heilmittel gehörten, sofern deren Wirkungen, außer am erkrankten Tiere selbst, auch an den Krankheitserregern, sei es innerhalb des befallenen Tieres, sei es außerhalb in unbelebten Medien, studiert werden, also die „Desinfektion“ im weitesten Sinne: die experimentelle Pharmakologie der großen Darm- und Hautparasiten so gut wie die der pathogenen Mikroben, der Bakterien und Protozoen. Zur Beherrschung dieses letzteren, noch ganz unbegrenzten Gebietes und seiner fruchtbaren Bearbeitung bedürfe es selbstverständlich der fachmännischen Kenntnis der pathogenen Mikroben selbst, ihrer Lebensweise und der von ihnen verursachten Erkrankungen, mithin einer angemessen vereinten Arbeit des Pharmakologen mit dem Mikrobenforscher und dem Seuchenkenner und Kliniker, endlich aber, sofern es sich um Suchen und Entdecken neuer oder Verbessern bekannter Heilmittel handele, vor allem mit dem Chemiker. In der Tat verdanke die pharmazeutisch-chemische Großindustrie ihre größten bahnbrechenden Erfolge solch planvoller Zusammenarbeit, verdanke ihr die Medizin und Hygiene ihre mächtigen Waffen gegen viele mörderischen, bis dahin fast unangreifbaren Seuchen.
