Abstract

The gamma ray astronomy experiment launched aboard HEAO 3 performed an all-sky exploratory survey for sources of gamma-ray line emission in the energy range of.05 to 10 MeV. The detectors were four high purity germanium crystals, each of about 100 cm active volume and energy resolution line width of about 3 keV FWHM at 1.33 MeV. Observations are reported on 22 solar flares, one of which emitted a narrow deuterium formation line at 2.225 ±.002 keV; galactic plane line upper limits; a variable source of.511 MeV radiation in the vicinity of the galactic center and long term variations in the source Cygnus X-1. The experiment performed successfully and when analysis of the entire data set is completed, the experiment will achieve the narrow line sensitivity of 10−4 photons/cm2-sec over most of the sky.
