Importance of Stratificational Inhomogenity for Pulmonary Gas Exchange

Abstract

The limiting effects of stratification on the effectiveness of alveolar gas exchange have been calculated using the values for diffusive conductance of distal airways obtained from an analysis of washout kinetics of He and SF6 by Okubo and Piiper (1974). For the lungs of 10 kg dogs, the stratificational component of the alveolar-arterial Po2 difference is estimated at about 0. 8 torr for resting conditions and at about 3. 5 torr for medium level exercise.
