Abstract
This panel discussion was directed by Sir Robert Macintosh (Oxford). Sir Robert Macintosh is familiar with the conditions in all continents by own experience, he has favorably influenced the development of anaesthesia in many countries around the world by travels and lectures. In the course of the discussion it was emphasized several times that there is little advantage in having complicated machines for inhalation anaesthesia in remote places because of difficulties and expense of service and replacement of oxygen- and nitrous oxide cylinders. It was reported about good experiences with the Epstein-Macintosh-Oxford (EMO) apparatus for ether-airanaesthesia; the EMO apparatus allows also artificial respiration.
