The father of colposcopy was Hans Hinselmann who was born in Neumünster, Holstein, in 1884. He received his training in Kiel, completing it in 1908. After a relatively short period of work in Dresden, Heidelberg, Kiel, Jena, and Giessen, he spent 13 years working under v. Franqué in Bonn. In 1925 he became medical director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the General Hospital in Hamburg-Altona.
