Experimental Bilayer Membrane Models

Abstract

The structure of cellular membranes is a central problem in biology. Interest in structure at the subcellular level derives primarily from the realization that the functional properties of biological membranes are a product of the molecular arrangement and the physical properties of the component molecules. The widely accepted hypothesis of membrane organization advanced by Davson and Danielli has the phospholipid component arranged in the form of a bimolecular sheet. On the basis of this hypothesis it is evident that many of the physical properties of biological membranes will be related to the corresponding properties of a phospholipid bilayer.
