Abstract

In 1953 it became clear from work with human red cells that the K-loss from cells treated with cardiac glycosides (or their aglucones) is due to inhibition of active Na-K-transport [1]. The inhibition of the Na-pump was later demonstrated in most cells showing active Na-K-transport, ranging from the frog skin epithelium to the cells of the ciliary body of the human eye [2–14].
