Effects of Some Substances on Release of Acid Hydrolases of Rat Liver

Abstract

Cholesterol is known to be an important constituent of biological membranes and is believed, on several grounds, to act as stabilizer of the phospholipid layers in membranes. It has recently been shown [1] that cholesterol is able to prevent the release in oitro of acid hydrolases from lysosomes of rat liver, previously incubated at pH 5 and 370. Furthermore it acts as a stabilizer in the red blood cell membrane imparting a greater resistence to haemolysis. In this connection, it seemed to us of some interest to investigate the action of other cell membrane constituents on the behavior of permeability of lysosomes in oitro.
