Energetics of Transport

Abstract

This brief review is intended specifically as a cementum to the papers in the section on physiology in this Symposium. Since those papers are diverse in approach and content this short essay can not cover the situation adequately. Much less could it aim at being comprehensive with respect to the field concerned with the energetics of transport processes. I felt it best simply to focus on some situations in which metabolic energy has been shown to be required for the movement of substances across cellular boundaries and to cover some of the mechanisms of energy transduction or utilization that have been suggested.
