Abstract
Lunar Geological Research. We have summed up the data available on the thermic and optical properties of the lunar soil, obtained by means of radar and radio-astronomic observations, by measurements of polarization, photometric and colorimetric measurements, measurements of luminescence and comparative laboratory research on terrestrial substances, leading to certain conclusions about the nature of the lunar soil.
We endeavoured to foresee how much we shall know about the morphology of the lunar surface and the origin of its geological formations at the beginning of a LIL programme, with the use of telescopic observation techniques and the aid of spacecraft of the Orbiter, Surveyor and other types operated by different countries. We have compared the morphological characteristics of certain terrestrial formations with those of the lunar formations Photographsd by spacecraft. This has enabled us to: discriminate between volcanic and meteoric formations; study the association between the central cones, folds, faults, etc... and the formations supposedly resembling calderas; examine the quantity and production process of the dust covering the Moon’s surface, its selenographic distribution and the consistence of the lunar soil; study the association between alignments of craters and the major parent crater; and so on. All these data furnish a basis for geological classification of the lunar formations.
Using the above-listed data, it is probable that LIL geologiets will have at their disposai: a) a complete map of the lunar topography; b) geological maps classifying by regions the flows and successive layers of substances ejected; c) maps showing thermic anomalies, scale or radar echoes, electro-magnetic properties of the soil, etc., with preliminary interpretations for the preparation of work.
Direct geological research could then concentrate on the following: travelling about the Moon collecting photographie documentation and measurements to be used later, in conjunction with data on soil consistence and soil temperatures, and radio-activity, and with the results of the analysis of samples collected, for purposes of making a detailed examination of the properties of the soil. The analysis of depth samples obtained by borings and holes dug at various depths will furnish information for study of the electrical and thermic properties of the soil, the radioactivity, the speed of propagation of sound, the magnetic field, the conductivity of the soil, the flux of non-solar heat, etc. Special attention will be paid to surface formations such as recent craters—their cavities, their rims, the substances ejected at the time of their formation, etc.; secondary craters; ancient, strongly eroded craters; central peaks; lava fieids; depressions in the soil, etc.
Investigation of the soil composition and of the gaseous emanations may have practical consequences.
