Abstract
Exploration of the Interplanetary Medium from Lunar and Cislunar Space. Observations and experiments in the interplanetary medium from lunar and cislunar space might be desirable for both exploration of the particular content of this region, and investigation of the elongated tail of the magnetosphere and of the solar wind on the side of the earth away from the sun.
Continuous observations of the zodiacal light from the Moon would not be disturbed by terrestrial scattering and airglow. These should give evidence whether or not there are really long time variations in the intensity of the zodiacal light. Further, such observations would also permit continuous monitoring of the zodiacal light between the corona and 30° elongation and beyond 90° elongation. If the “Gegenschein” is a phenomenon caused by an enhanced backward scattering intensity in the scattering diagram of interplanetary dust (Siedentopf 1955, Whipple 1955), this could also be confirmed by observations far from the Earth (Siedentopf).
Another possibility is the continuous measurement of the plasma and magnetic fieids in the backward region of the magnetosphere and the interplanetary medium. Especially interesting seems to be the possibility of carrying out ion cloud releases by space probes in this region. Observation of these clouds should be advantageous from the lunar surface, since the observation site need not necessarily be in a twilight region as in experiments carried out by our Institute up to now. Furthermore, any small motion of the cloud due to magnetic forces and solar wind can be better observed from a lunar station which is relatively close to the point of release.
