Abstract

William Roentgen of Würzburg, discoverer of the X-ray, paved the way for those who subsequently developed hysterosalpingographic techniques. Ludlow (1909) reported calcified fibromyomata of the uterus which had been diagnosed roentgenologically. The first hysterosalpingogram was obtained by Rindfleisch (1910) who filled the uterine cavity with a barium paste and then made a roentgenogram which demonstrated the endometrial cavity and the left tube. Rubin (1914) and Carey (1914) pioneered in the evolution of uterosalpingography. Heuser (1925) and Stein and Arens (1927) demonstrated the value of hysterosalpingography combined with pneumoperitoneum. It is fitting that we should acknowledge the help which these and many other investigators have given us.
