Polycystic Ovarian Disease

  • Chapter
Joint Meeting

Abstract

Polycystic ovarian disease is an entity in which the anovulatory ovary can be converted into an ovulatory one. Wedge resection of the ovaries, often producing a dramatic and irreversible return of hormonal homeostasis, has been the treatment of choice for many years. First performed in 1895, wedge resection of the ovaries was frequently done in the first part of this century for a wide spectrum of menstrual disorders with varying results. In 1935 Stein and Leventhal brought some order out of chaos by defining a syndrome of polycystic ovaries in which wedge resection, in properly selected cases, was very successful. Since 1950 their results have been confirmed by many observers throughout the world.
