Alternative techniques for charting variables

Throughout the previous three chapters there has been a heavy emphasis on the use of the mean and range, or \( \left( {\bar X,R} \right)\) chart. The reason is twofold. Traditionally, any attempt to introduce control charts within an organisation usually resulted in the use of this well-tried chart, and therefore it is natural to introduce it first in any text on chart techniques.
