Abstract

An amorphous solid is one in which the structure is not only non-periodic but also lacks both extended symmetry and any form of long range order, in contrast to the quasicrystalline materials discussed in the next Chapter which, although nonperiodic and lacking extended symmetry, still retain long range order and hence give rise to sharp Bragg-like peaks in their diffraction pattern. This Chapter will describe the general principles involved in studying the structure of inorganic amorphous solids by neutron and X-ray diffraction, using examples taken from a wide range of materials, and indicate how their various structures are interrelated. A much more detailed account, together with a comprehensive list of references, can be found in Chapter 8 of “Experimental Techniques of Glass Science”, as cited in the bibliography (Wright, 1993), and two earlier reviews by the present author (Wright, 1974; Wright and Leadbetter, 1976).
