Abstract
It is possible, but difficult, to obtain multiple responses from the superior colliculus in the monkey in response to a flash of light. In the Clarke Horsley plane the surface of the colliculus is so nearly vertical that the chances of hitting the superficial layers are much improved by bending the head at least 30° forward. P. M. Daniel and I have recorded from the colliculus responses within 15–20° of the visual axis, checked in some experiments by simultaneous records from the posterolateral cortical surface on which the macular area is represented. It seems that the peripheral field has a very restricted representation. Brouwer and Zeeman (1926) failed to find signs of degeneration after macular lesions in the monkey, and the erroneous conclusion has been drawn that the macula is not represented on the colliculus (Duke Elder, 1931).
