Abstract

Although there is much to suggest that biological membranes have a lipoprote in character, their actual composition and structure has not been established beyond question. The electron microscopic image of these membranes is usually a thin, dense line splitting at higher resolution into two ; but this image itself tells us little about the nature of the membrane except that it reacts strongly with various fixatives. A review of these matters has been given by Robertson (4).
