Fine structure of the kinetoplast in a trypanosomid flagellate

Abstract

The kinetoplast is a disc shaped organelle (ca. 1 μ in diameter) which lies adjacent to the blepharoplast or basal granule in trypanosomid flagellates. The blepharoplast is generally regarded as the starting point of the flagellum and it has long been known that the blepharoplast and the kinetoplast are intimately related (1). Both these organelles reproduce by bipartition at the onset of cell division. The function of the kinetoplast remains unknown. The work to be described in the present communication was undertaken in an attempt to learn something of the structural interrelationships existing between the flagellum, blepharoplast and kinetoplast in the trypanosomid flagellate Strigomonas oncopelti.
