Abstract

Sorne transmembrane mechanisms involved in the transformation of external signal into specific cell response involve the rapid production of intracellular second messengers. These second messengers relay the initial signal in a sequence of events acting to eventually regulate a specific physiological cell process at long term. This concept of signaling was initiated by the discovery of the role of cyclic AMP in numerous cellular processes and emphasized the role of the cAMP-generating enzyme, adenylyl cyclase, in cellular signaling.
