Zusammenfassung

Der Name Virus von dem Lateinischen virus, das Giftige, wurde ursprünglich auf krankmachende Agentien im allgemeinen angewandt. Später wurde der Begriff eingeengt und schließlich nur für solche Erreger benützt, die sich nicht auf künstlichen Nährböden vermehren, sondern nur in lebenden Zellen, und die einen Durchmesser unter 300 mμ, besitzen, also wesentlich kleiner sind als die üblichen Mikroorganismen.
