Zusammenfassung

Die Leber nimmt im Stoffwechsel eine zentrale Stellung ein. Ein großer Teil der vom Darm resorbierten Nahrungsstoffe wird von der Leber vorübergehend aufgenommen und in den Intervallen zwischen den Mahlzeiten langsam wieder an das Blut abgegeben. Die im Anschluß an die einzelnen Mahlzeiten in Form unregelmäßiger Schübe resorbierten Nahrungsmengen werden von der Leber auf diese Weise in einen kontinuierlichen Nahrungsstrom umgewandelt, der den Zellen der Peripherie ihren Bedarf in geeigneter und annähernd gleichbleibender Konzentration zuführt. Auch der Umbau der Nahrungsstoffe im Zwischenstoffwechsel geht zu einem großen Teil in der Leber vor sich. Im Überschuß aufgenommenes Kohlenhydrat wird in der Leber in Fett, im Überschuß aufgenommenes Protein zum Teil in Kohlenhydrat verwandelt. Die Ernährung der übrigen Organe wird auf diese Weise auch in qualitativer Hinsicht unabhängig von der durch wechselnde Umweltfaktoren bedingten Zusammensetzung des resorbierten Nahrungsgemisches. Durch die Anpassungsfähigkeit ihrer Funktion an die jeweilige Stoffwechsellage wird die Leber zu einem wichtigen Faktor bei der Regulation des Wasserhaushalts, der Körpertemperatur und des SäureBasen-Gleichgewichts. Auch bei der Entgiftung exogener und endogener Gifte spielt die Leber eine wichtige Rolle. Dadurch daß sie, gleichsam als Gegenspieler der endokrinen Drüsen, die im Blute kreisenden Hormone laufend aus dem Blute entfernt, ist sie auch an der Regulation des Hormongleichgewichts beteiligt. Die von der Leber produzierte Galle ist ein für die Resorption der Lipoide wichtiges Verdauungssekret, gleichzeitig aber auch ein Exkret, mit dem zahlreiche im Organismus unverwertbare Stoffwechselschlacken ausgeschieden werden.
