Abstract
In optically pumped solid-state lasers the light source must supply the maximum possible light output in the spectral region that can be absorbed by the laser material. Electrical current, either continuous or pulsed, is supplied to the pump source and converted into optical radiation. The light source and laser material are contained in a pumping arrangement which concentrates the light from the pump source onto the laser material. In this chapter we will discuss the salient features of the three components which together comprise the optical pump system of a solid-state laser: the pump source, the power supply, and the pump cavity.
