Abstract

In the most basic colliding-beam storage ring bunches of conterrotating electrons and positrons share a common equilibrium orbit. The evenly spaced bunches collide at 2n b locations around the ring, where n b is the number of bunches in each beam. At each collision point the machine optics are manipulated to minimize both the spot size and the effect of the beam-beam interaction. The separated function guide field is characterized by alternate gradient focusing.
