Abstract

We have so far been concerned mainly with the transition probabilities of atoms and the optical energy emitted or absorbed in transitions. Here we must consider the coherent interaction between light and atoms in order to attain a basic understanding of the most important characteristic of the laser, namely, coherence. Then we discuss how the interaction of atoms with coherent light is different from an interaction with incoherent light.
