Zusammenfassung

Die Herzrhythmusstörung „Vorhofflimmern“ ist seit langem bekannt: ihre Erstbeschreibung erfolgte vermutlich vor über 300 Jahren durch Harvey, der im Tierexperiment eine undulierende Aktivität der Vorhöfe beobachtete. Die klinische Beobachtung eines schnellen, unregelmäßigen Pulses sowie dessen erfolgreiche Behandlung durch die Gabe von Digitalis geht auf Withering zurück. Die Diagnose „Vorhofflimmern“ ließ sich mit Einführung der Elektrokardiographie erstmals objektivieren; die entsprechenden elektrokardiographischen Befunde sind seit den 20er Jahren bekannt.
