Abstract

Processes based on the properties of ions, encountered in brackish and seawater, are described and discussed in this chapter. Whereas in distillation the amount and kind of salts contained in the raw feed water are of no importance to the process and do not affect the economics, in all ionic processes the amount of dissolved salts is of primary importance. This is true independently if salts have to be removed from the solution or if a dilute solution is to be separated from the feed, leaving as waste a more concentrated solution. The amount of salts to be removed affects in ion exchange the amount and cost of regenerant, in electrodialysis the consumption of electrical energy and in reverse osmosis the required pressure. Increased pressure affects membrane life and energy requirements. Thus, ionic processes are in first instance indicated for brackish waters with more or less reduced salinity.
