The Genus Prosthecobacter

  • Chapter

Abstract

The fusiform caulobacters were first reported among the periphytic bacteria that had attached to glass slides submerged in lakes (Henrici and Johnson, 1935). All isolates to date have been obtained from freshwater sources, including ponds, lakes, and raw sewage (de Bont, Staley, and Pankratz, 1970; Staley, de Bont, and de Jonge, 1976). Fusiform caulobacters are frequently observed attached to sheathed bacteria and cyanobacteria as well as to detrital particles in samples from aquatic habitats.
