Nordic-Baltic Ventures during the Early Post-Soviet Time: Some Company Examples

Abstract

Nordic companies were quick to move into the post-Soviet Baltic region during the mid-1990s, as opportunities for investment became available. The early investors represent a variety of firms, large and small, and within different sectors, yet they exhibit some similar motives and experiences. This chapter will examine the early entry of Nordic firms into the Baltic region and describe some examples of different decision factors involved. The data are derived from descriptive interviews and site visits of 34 firms at their locations within Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and St Petersburg, Russia. Results show that significant changes in operations have occurred for some companies since their initial investment, including transfer of ownership to either the Nordic or the Baltic side, and addition of new product or service lines as markets are discovered.
