Abstract
CAE is a term given to a collection of tools that assist electronics designers in specifying and simulating electronic circuits. The term has been generally associated with low-cost engineering workstations. CAD tools assist designers in implementing circuit designs, but they do not design automatically. Printed circuit board and integrated circuit layout digitizing systems are examples of CAD tools. Design automation tools, on the other hand, perform design work of their own. Examples of design automation tools include automatic placement and routing. For the purposes of this discussion, all three are combined within the overall CAE/CAD/CAM function.
