Abstract
The first use of analytic methods in number theory was made by P.G.Dirichlet who, in a series of papers (1837a,b,c, 1838a,b, 1839), obtained several new important results. He proved in particular the infinitude of primes in arithmetic progressions with coprime first element and difference.
