Zusammenfassung
Entzündliche Herzerkrankungen spielten in früheren Statistiken zu den Ursachen plötzlicher Todesfälle bei Sportlern kaum eine Rolle [18], da sie häufig bei der Autopsie nicht erkannt wurden. In aktuelleren Zusammenstellungen ist jedoch die Myokarditis meist die zweit-oder dritthäufigste kardiale Todesursache [32]. Dies ist auf die im Vergleich zu den älteren histologischen Untersuchungsmethoden wesentlich sensibleren komplementären immunhistologischen Nachweisverfahren zurückzuführen. Eine hohe Dunkelziffer nichterkannter tödlicher Myokarditiden wurde bereits in den 70er Jahren [23] vermutet.
