Abstract
SO MANY exaggerated claims have been made in the past for speech recognition systems that the reality, for several years to come, will probably appear commonplace. No dramatic advances in recognition systems are likely to appear before the 1990s. What we shall more probably see are steady improvements in accuracy and in vocabulary size, with falling prices and imaginative ideas bringing a substantial growth in applications in certain areas.
