As stated earlier, interactions of EM radiations with matter at atomic-molecular scale result in selective absorption, emission and reflection of EM energy packets, i.e. photons, which are best explained by the particle nature of light. These processes lead to a decrease or increase in the observed intensity of radiation at a particular wavelength and will be discussed in more detail, focussing attention on the spectral behaviour of minerals and rocks, in this chapter.
