Physical Characterization of the Protein Molecule
Expending research effort on impure materials is a gross waste of time and talent. Yet there always exists the danger that a protein chemist, working with materials that are intrinsically hard to purify, may carry out detailed chemical studies with contaminated samples. It is the purpose of this chapter to outline some techniques by which at least the physical homogeneity of a protein may be judged. Such studies are a necessary prelude to detailed chemical investigations of proteins.
