Abstract

In a previous article on mutation in this series (RHAESE), mainly the mechanisms of mutation induction by various agents were reviewed. Similar topics were previously discussed by KAPLAN and WINKLER. A wealth of information has been accumulated which clearly allows us to describe the mechanisms of mutation induction and inactivation in molecular terms. However, this is true for only a few classes of mutagens such as alkylating agents (RHAESE and BOETTGER), UV-irradiation (WITKIN), hydroxylamin (FREESE and FREESE) and a few others. The mechanism of action of many other mutation inducing agents not belonging to either one of these classes, as well as the mechanism of spontaneous mutations, is still far from being known. Much more work — especially concerning the influence of repair systems on mutation induction — will be necessary before our understanding of the basic mechanisms of chemical mutagenesis is complete.
