Abstract

The molecular mechanism of genetic recombination confines an area of the overall DNA metabolism that overlaps extensively with the neighbouring areas of DNA replication and repair. The recent elucidation of a role for transcription in DNA replication has been complemented by results proving transcription to be involved in recombination as well (see below), a fact that underlines the importance of these overlaps. The complexity of the general picture is further increased by the observation of several mechanisms in a single organism operating concurrently within all the areas mentioned. These mechanisms may be either partially or completely independent of each other.
