Abstract

Since it is impossible to cover within the scope of this article all discoveries within the last two years in the field of DNA replication, it is the objective of this report to emphasize those subfields in which our understanding of DNA replication has made the most conspicuous progress. Therefore three topics have been selected for discussion in this article: 1. Important progress has been made in our knowledge of the mechanism and the enzymology of the initiation of DNA replication. Most progress in this area has been gained not with pro-or eukaryotic organisms, but with bacteriophages whose genome consists of single-stranded DNA. 2. Membrane attachment of DNA is a phenomenon common to all organisms, even the most primitive ones (bacteriophages and viruses). Recent discoveries in the engagement of the inner nuclear membrane in eukaryotes and the cell membrane in prokaryotes will be discussed. 3. In a separate chapter two enzymes will be discussed in more detail: DNA polymerases and DNA nucleases.
