Abstract
The mechanical properties of blood vessels are an important determinant of hemodynamics. Large arteries, as chief site of vascular impedance, determine the pulsatile load on the heart. They fulfill a “windkessel”-function in smoothing out the pulsatile flow stemming from the heart in a continuous flow through the capillaries. Because of its mechanical function and because of its proneness to disease, the arterial wall is object of intensive research.
