Abstract

Polarized free electrons can be obtained by photoemission or field emission of the spin-oriented electrons from magnetized materials. Such measurements provide interesting, in some cases striking, information on the structure of magnetic solids. Magnetic insulators and semiconductors tend to give results that can be interpreted within the framework of current models, whereas the results from metals call for a change of either the band theory of magnetism or the existing models of electron emission.
