Zusammenfassung

Wesentliche Elemente der deutschsprachigen Pädiatrie gehen auf die Wiener Schule des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts zurück. Das erste Kinderspital des deutschsprachigen Raums, nach St. Petersburg und Paris das dritte in Europa, wurde 1837 in Wien errichtet. Aus ihm entstand 1849 das St.-Anna-Kinderspital, die erste deutschsprachige Universitätskinderklinik. Namen wie Mauthner und von Pirquet sind mit der führenden Rolle der frühen österreichischen Kinderheilkunde verbunden.
