Abstract

Much has been said about the application of Advanced Manufacturing Technology together with the techniques and equipment used within industry on various factory automation projects. But why is AMT necessary — what has brought about this urgent need to automate? What philosophy should be adopted to ensure cost effective advances in manufacturing?

The first part of this paper looks at some facts as to where we are as a nation. The second part gives the authors opinion on our standing and what we ought to do about it. Finally, a cost effective approach to factory wide AMT is described briefly.
