Zusammenfassung

Vor der Verwendung radioaktiver Tracer war das Studium mancher biologischer Vorgänge durch die anwendbaren Verfahren weitgehend beschränkt. Einerseits sind diese oft zu wenig genau, wobei die Grenzen in unserem Fall hauptsächlich durch die chemischen Analysenmethoden bestimmt werden, und andererseits wird durch die meisten Methoden der zu messende biologische Vorgang selbst stark gestört. Die Bestimmung kleiner Ionenmengen in organischem Material ist an sich chemisch oder physikalisch (Flammenphotometer) bis zu einer oft sehr hohen Genauigkeit möglich. Sollen dagegen, z. B. nach Aufnahme kleiner Kochsalzmengen, Unterschiede in der Verteilung festgestellt werden, die sich in geringer Zu-oder Abnahme dieser Normalwerte ausdrücken, sind diese Verfahren zu wenig empfindlich. Es müßten wesentliche Mengen Salz gegeben werden, die dann aber selbst eine nicht zu vernachlässigende Störung der physiologischen Stoffwechselgleichgewichte — entsprechend einer Belastung — zur Folge hätten. Vor allem ist auch der zeitliche Verlauf einer biologischen Funktion im physiologischen Rahmen mit Hilfe der Tracermethode verfolgbar.
