Histamine and Experimental Asthma of the Guinea Pig

Abstract

The respiratory symptoms produced in sensitized guinea pigs submitted to inhalations of the specific antigen were called by Ratner (1953) “respiratory anaphylaxis”. Since those symptoms have sufficient analogy with the human asthmatic syndrome, we prefer to call them “experimental asthma”. Kallós and Pagel (1937) also concluded that inhalation of the homologous antigen elicits in the allergic guinea pig attacks which clinically, roentgenologically, pharmacologically and immunologically simulate human bronchial asthma. Furthermore, according to Malkiel (1951), ACTH and cortisone do not protect guinea pigs against fatal anaphylaxis, in spite of the great improvement obtained with these hormones in human asthma. Feinberg et al. (1953) have demonstrated that ACTH and cortisone markedly inhibited experimental asthma in guinea pigs passively sensitized with aerosol of crystallized ovalbumin. A similar inhibitory effect could not be obtained in the bronchospasm of the guinea pig produced by an aerosol of histamine.
