Histamine Metabolism in Man

  • Chapter
Histamine and Anti-Histaminics

Abstract

It has been shown that there are considerable differences between the species as regards the catabolism of histamine both in vitro (Blaschko, Friedman, Hawes and Nilsson, 1959) and in vivo (Schayer, 1956, 1959). Such differences have also been found in studies of histamine formation (Waton, 1956; Schayer, see Chapter 4, Section D). Besides, it is well known, that some species are more sensitive to histamine than others and that man has a comparatively high sensitivity. For these reasons alone a separate discussion of histamine metabolism in man seems warranted. Furthermore histamine metabolism in man has been studied not only in healthy subjects but also in patients with various diseases. The abundant literature on the occurrence of histamine in various tissues, blood and urine from man has recently been reviewed by van Arsdel and Beall (1960) and by Dunér and Pernow (1960).

Supported by United States Public Health Service (Grant E 3379).

This review attempts to cover the literature up to December 1961.
