Abstract
An n-dimensional manifold M is an ‘open book’ if it is the relative mapping torus of a rel ∂ automorphism of an (n − 1)-dimensional manifold with boundary, or equivalently if there exists a codimension 2 homology framed submanifold N n−2 ⊂ M n such that the exterior fibres over S 1.
