Abstract

Uricase (urico-oxidase, urate oxidase) is found in the tissues of most animals, except for those of the higher primates and man, and in certain microorganisms (e.g. urate-adapted yeasts). For the routine preparation of the enzyme, pork liver and beef kidney appear to be the preferred sources. Crude, alkaline extracts of these tissues will catalyze the oxidation by air of approximately 10 moles of substrate per minute per mg protein, when tested at pH 9.0 in a borate-containing buffer at 38° C.
